What information must legally be on a UK dog ID tag?
Under the UK Control of Dogs Order 1992, every dog ID tag must legally state:
- Owner's surname
- Owner's house number (or name) and postcode
While adding a phone number isn't legally required, it is strongly recommended so anyone who finds your dog can reach you instantly.
Can I get fined if my dog doesn’t have a collar tag?
Yes. Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, failing to have a compliant collar and ID tag in a public place is considered an offence. If prosecuted, owners face fines of up to £5,000. On top of that, dog wardens have the legal right to seize tagless dogs in public as strays.
What makes slide-on BioThane dog tags better than metal tags?
They are 100% silent, waterproof, and won't fall off. Traditional metal dog tags jingle noisily against food bowls, scratch quickly, and regularly snap off split rings during outdoor adventures. Our slide-on BioThane® dog tags slide onto the collar, never rattle, don't catch, and wipe clean instantly after muddy walks.
Will these slide-on dog tags fit my dog’s existing collar?
Yes! Our slide-on dog ID tags are designed for Biothane collars, but they can also fit standard flat webbing and leather collars. Simply select your collar width when ordering to ensure a secure fit.
Are any dogs exempt from wearing a collar and tag?
Yes, but only under specific working conditions. Exemptions apply to:
- Registered guide dogs accompanying a visually impaired person.
- Police or armed forces dogs on active duty.
- Dogs actively herding livestock or working pack hounds.
- Dogs engaged in official search and rescue operations.
Note: All standard companion pets must wear a compliant collar and tag in public spaces.
